In the absence of light, average response indexes (RI) for dOpa1+/+ and dOpa1+/− were similar (RI = 0.072, RI = 0.096, respectively, p>0.05) (Figure 3B).
When counties were divided by region, counties in the Northeast and Midwest had, on average, more extensive responses to the 2011 heat, with average heat response indices of 3.9 (n = 24) and 3.0 (n = 50) respectively (i.e., on average counties performed between three and four of nine considered heat responses).
Counties in the South and West had lower average heat response indices [South: 2.6 (n = 35); West: 1.2 (n = 30)].

All estimates were evaluated as weighted averages using sample size as the weight in the following formula: R a t e j = ∑ i = 1 n i (S S i ⋅ Rate i ) N, where Rate j represents the average response rate for measure j, i indexes the group, n i is the sample size for the ith group and N is the combined sample size of all groups.
For the purposes of comparison, daily output of the modelled climate growth response index (GRI d ) was averaged for the equivalent 8-day periods used with the MODIS data.
The resulting data was then used to obtain a compound-specific response index for each gene by normalizing the gene's average transcript level following perturbations in the two clones against its average level across all perturbations within the same experimental batch to obtain a gene specific response index.
Based on the comparison between simulated daily growth response index (GRI d ) (summarised with 8-day means) and average 8-day composite MODIS Net PSN values for the study area (converted to relative values using annual maxima) for the period from 2000 through 2010.
Bulk refractive index changes were removed by subtracting the reference flow cell responses; the average response of a blank injection was also subtracted from all sensorgrams.
