In order to evaluate the variation in estimates of annual/perennial rate differences in sequences most similar to actual ITS data, one set of 1000 replicate simulations were carried out using the nucleotide substitution model parameters and average rate differences estimated from the ITS sequences of the 16 annual/perennial pairs (see bottom rows of Table 2).
