Figure 5 and Additional file 3 demonstrate that the average pattern in walk does not have a biphasic nature.
Surface-based cross-subject average retinotopic maps suggest that the population average pattern in the anterior most part of visual parietal cortex consists of two separated (anterior and posterior) upper field representations and two separated (medial and lateral) lower field representations (see Figure 1, upper).
However, in individual subjects, the size of the effect depended on the usage preferences of the subject: for example, the minority of people who were born without a hand but nevertheless make extensive use of their intact hand showed a pattern of activation that resembled the average pattern seen in those who had lost a hand in later life.
