The phrase "average friend" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe a friend who is typical or not exceptional in any particular way.
Example: "While I appreciate all my friends, I would say that John is just an average friend compared to the others who go above and beyond."
Alternatives: "ordinary friend" or "typical friend".
