First, we determined the correlations between the average cell type specific spontaneous spiking and average dendrite length during anesthetized and awake conditions.
For example, the average dendrite length of a cell type was usually around ∼30 50% longer when compared with in vitro studies (e.g., L2 [8578 μm vs. 4309 μm { Meyer, Wimmer, Hemberger, et al. 2010}], L4py [7492 μm vs. 2813 μm { Staiger et al. 2004}], and L6 neurons [5861 and 5899 μm vs. 3916 and 3868 μm for L6cc and L6ct pyramids, respectively { Kumar and Ohana 2008)}).

Finally, the mean dendrite length was calculated by dividing the total dendrite length by the total cell number.
Treatment with KOS GSE also alleviated the reduction in mean dendrite length significantly (Figure 2C).
Total dendritic length, number of branches, average of dendrite length and Sholl analysis were quantified using NeuroStudio software (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY).
Cluster number was calculated by counting the average number of clusters per 100 microns of dendrite length.
Object number was calculated by counting the average number of clusters per 10 microns of dendrite length.
The dendrite length was expressed as the number of dendritic trees that exceeded the limit of the ROI (number of dendrites > 50 μm).
The relatively large SDs of the average number of VPM synapses per cell were only partly reflected by the differences in dendrite length, which usually varied no more than about 20% within the sample of a respective cell type (Table 1).
Percentages of detached dendrites were calculated by the ratios of detached vs total dendrite length.
Spine number was normalized by dendrite length to determine density.
