The phrase "average categories for" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing classifications or groupings that represent typical or mean values within a certain context.
Example: "The study analyzed average categories for income levels across different regions."
Alternatives: "typical classifications for" or "mean groups for".
Bold values indicate medication (combination) associations with mental state domain where improvement above the group average was found (i.e. patients on this combination would be more likely to be in the above average category for improvement).
In the activation maps in Fig. 2, clusters with a significant average category preference for printed words within each age group are depicted for tool words (yellow) and animal words (light green), and are indicated by arrows and labels (see Appendix A, Table 2 for cluster statistics).
To test whether the brain areas with a preference for tool and animal words showed a similar response pattern for their corresponding pictures, we computed the relevant age group's average category preference for pictures in these areas.
Fig. 3 displays the average category preference for words (tool words – animal words) in all animal picture selective voxels (top) and all tool picture selective voxels (bottom) within each spherical ROI and age group (see Section 2 for details on ROI selection, see Appendix C for % signal change in individual conditions relative to the fixation baseline).
The categorisations were highly correlated among the specialists (Kendall's tau = 0.671, 0.787 and 0.751; P <0.001), allowing us to average the categories for each patient.
Deviation contrasts, which enable the comparison of each category to the unweighted average of all categories for that variable, were used for the four age groups because there is no obvious comparison group.
