While the clergy only has a 0.81% probability of automation, according to data from The Future of Jobs, Susskind believes even algorithms might one day replace the ordained.
Among the professions deemed by the Bank research to have a high probability of automation (around 70 per cent) are sales and customer service workers.
It classified jobs into three categories – those with a high (greater than 66%), medium 33-666%) and low (less than 33%) probability of automation, and made an adjustment for the proportion of employment those jobs represented.
In these cases, the probabilities were calculated as weighted averages of the probabilities of automation for each US occupation within the group.
"Taking the probabilities of automation, and multiplying them by the numbers employed, gives a broad brush estimate of the number of jobs potentially automatable.
Frey and Osborne (2013) also admitted that their model on the probability of occupation automation estimates does not account for variations within occupations.
The probability of computerization, or automation more generally, is not the only factor that determines whether jobs will be lost or not.
"People who work part-time are more likely to work in roles at a higher risk of automation, but ultimately your occupation determines the probability of automation, not your working pattern," the ONS said.
