The vast majority of image authenticity judgments, however, are still made by eye, and to our knowledge only one published study has explored the extent to which people can detect inconsistencies in images.
Authenticity judgments were contrasted with emotion judgments and a word detection control condition to ensure that any significant activation was indeed specific to the processing of authenticity.
This contrast indicated an increase in activity for authenticity judgments in the medial PFC, the retrosplenium, and the right and left TPJ.
The ToM network was shown (based on a priori ROIs) to be modulated by differences in authenticity, both during emotion and authenticity judgments.
An individual differences analysis found that greater accuracy on a post hoc test of authenticity judgments of laughter predicted the magnitude of passive listening responses to laughter in amPFC, as well as several regions in sensorimotor cortex (in line with simulation accounts of emotion perception).
Although sensorimotor regions did not show a greater mean response to the Evoked/Real compared with the Emitted/Posed laughs, regions in pre-SMA and lateral somatosensory cortex showed a graded response to all laughter that could be predicted by the participant's postscan accuracy on emotional authenticity judgments.

For emotion judgments, four responses were possible: anger, sadness, happiness, fear (presented in German as: Wut, Trauer, Freude, Angst), whereas for authenticity, judgment responses were presented as authentic (echt) and play acted (theater; described to participants beforehand as gespielt, i.e., play acted).
First, based on the above concepts, we herein define three statistical and temporal measures that exhibit distinct properties under admissible and malicious operations for latter authenticity judgment.
For authenticity judgment only the two left-most buttons were used (Figs. 1, 2).
Each experimental run (one per participant) included 178 trials (limited only by the number of stimuli available), of which 72 were used for an emotion judgment task and 72 for an authenticity judgment task.
This contrast was first performed for authenticity-judgment tasks to determine whether the network found previously is influenced by stimulus authenticity.
