Austere Challenge 2012 was originally scheduled for the spring, but General Franklin said it was postponed at Israel's request.
The Israeli military said in a statement that the joint exercise, Austere Challenge 12, would take place during the second half of the year.
For the three-week exercise, called Austere Challenge, American military personnel operated Patriot land-based missile defense batteries on temporary deployment to Israel as well as Aegis missile defense ships, which carry tracking radars and interceptors.
The planner, Lt. Gen. Craig A. Franklin of the Air Force, said the three-week drill, called Austere Challenge 2012, would be the sixth in a series of large-scale joint exercises and had been planned for more than two years.
Austere Challenge will play out in May, shortly after a massive joint missile defense exercise, Juniper Cobra, that will involve U.S. and Israeli defense systems and missile interceptors.
John Ross, a spokesman for the U.S. European Command, which will conduct Austere Challenge, said the exercise "is not in response to any real-world event".
