Unlike mice in which olfaction is the dominant sensory modality, horseshoe bats are auditory specialists that use a system of narrowband constant frequency echolocation in which the inner ear is finely tuned to the incoming echoes of the emitted call.
Pou3f4 and Tecta (specifically the regions comprising exons 7, 9 and 18 19 of TECTA in human) were selected for further amplification and sequencing in additional eutherian taxa, focusing on the 'hearing and auditory' specialists, the bats (Chiroptera; Table S3).
Examination of selection pressures in Tecta and Pou3f4 across a taxonomic sample that included a wide representation of auditory specialists, the bats, did not uncover any evidence for a role in echolocation.
Furthermore, the effects of noise exposure are cumulative, as Robert V. Harrison, an auditory specialist at the University of Toronto, noted recently in The International Journal of Pediatrics.
James Henry, a specialist in auditory rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Portland, Ore., where many veterans with traumatic brain injuries are treated for tinnitus, said that Dr. Cima had done "probably the best study to date, a good job that is advancing the field".
She went to a hearing specialist in an effort to show that auditory problems were also an issue.
Neurophysiological monitoring (electroencephalography, somatosensory evoked potential, brainstem auditory evoked potential) was available online and accessible by the specialist from a remote PC.

Noise treatments should thus be detectable by the fish, but without reaching SPLs that might cause auditory damage; sensitivity to temporary auditory damage appears to be reduced for fish with no specialist hearing adaptations compared to 'specialist' species [8], [39], and the durations of noise exposure in this study were relatively brief.
Specialists thus are suggested not to focus only on syntactical problems but also on the development of auditory perception and receptive language for they could be the underlying causes of the writing problems.
