Clinicians suggested adding the Worry Tree (a CBT tool providing a structured way of monitoring and assessing problems relating to anxiety; see Additional file 1: Figure S1), the Voices Diary (a motivational tool allowing service users to record auditory hallucinations), and audio files for CBT and mindfulness.
An example template for audio files (an auditory acceptability judgment task) is included on the author's Web site (see the Supplemental Materials section below).
Cross-referencing these nominal genes with published empirical studies of gene expression and gene knock-out mutants suggested 49 genes (corresponding to 46 of the possible 89 genomic regions) were likely to have roles in auditory system development (Additional file 1: Table S4).
In Fig. 1b, a masking noise occluded a gap in the tone, causing the subjective experience of the tone continuing through the noise (the auditory continuity illusion [5], [29], File S2).

In the last few years the field of neuro-prosthetics has seen some very promising advances, including hearing aids that beam audio signals directly into the auditory nerve, with no need of the ear, allowing a person to receive phone calls or listen to MP3 files within their own brain circuits.
