In the perceptual tasks (tone perception and vowel listening) subjects were instructed to lay still and listen attentively to the presented stimuli.
In order to control attention during the passive fMRI task we used a previously applied procedure to assure attentive observation of the presented pictures [ 28]: Before the scanning procedure, subjects were instructed to attentively observe the pictures and told that we would check their attention by asking them to identify the pictures after the scanning session.
During scanning, bird exemplars from each of the three conditions (category-training, visual exposure, and no training) were presented and subjects were instructed to view the birds attentively.
