Particularly concerning is the documented association between NSSI, suicidality (i.e., suicidal ideation and attempt), and completed suicide, although the nature of these relationships is complex [ 3].
There were 42, 17, and 5 studies with dichotomous data available for a meta-analysis of the factors associated with suicide ideation, suicide attempt and completed suicide, respectively.
Regardless of fatal intent, people who have previously self-harmed remain at higher risk for suicide attempt and completed suicide [ 1, 24, 25].
Participants 37 936 patients with ADHD born between 1960 and 1996 and followed from 2006 to 2009 for treatment status by ADHD drug treatment and suicide related events (suicide attempt and completed suicide).
To estimate the associations between these factors and suicide, we calculated pooled odds ratios (OR) for suicide ideation, suicide attempt, and completed suicide separately, using RevMan 5.0 software (RevMan software, Version 5.0, Cochrane Collaboration, Oxford, United Kingdom).
This finding is supported by Shilubane et al. [ 16] and Zhang et al. [ 29] who found relationship problems as a determinant of suicide attempt and completed suicide among adolescents.
Our meta-analysis similarly found that people with a mood disorder had 2.48-, 3.44- and 20.31-fold 20.31-foldk of suicide ideation, suicide attempt and completed suicide in Chigherriskectively.
Also, as the review by James [ 32] highlights, there is a need for clinicians to also recognise that the ADHD population is at increased risk of suicide attempt and completed suicide.
It cannot be denied, however, that the members of this group might repeat attempts and complete suicide in the future.
