A company in South Africa has just launched solar-powered ATMs for rural areas with intermittent mains power.Other companies offer bigger systems, for $1,500 and upwards, which can power "solar kiosks" and other installations that enable people to start businesses.
Bank of America has phased out its "Campus Edge" student account and instead steers students to e-Banking, an account that waives a monthly $8.95 fee as long as the account holder uses ATMs for transactions (rather than a live teller) and agrees to receive electronic statements.
The bank is modest in size: as of last November it had just €6.3 billion ($8.3 billion) in assets, 33,400 accounts and 13 ATMs (for use by its own clients, which comprise religious organisations and individuals, Holy See lay employees and foreign countries' embassies).
Few people realize that Americans are unwitting ATMs for foreign drug consumers.
It has a processing center in Mumbai, India, where it recently began operating a network of ATMs for Citibank India.
"People have been talking about futuristic ATMs for a long time,"says Diebold's chief executive, Walden O'Dell.
