Promoter sequences have evolved at roughly 1.3 times background rate in the SDD/SDE clade and at 1.5 times the background rate on the SDD lineage (fig. 10), suggesting some mixture of increased PS and relaxation of constraint.
We are currently losing species at 1000 times the background rate – that is, the natural rate of extinction.

Even at the most conservative estimate, other species are being extinguished at 100 to 1,000 times the background rate observable in the fossil record.
For these analyses, a linear model was used to estimate excess relative risk per sievert (ERR/Sv): where R D is the rate at dose D, R0 is the background rate (stratified to adjust for potential confounders), β is the ERR/Sv, D is the cumulative lagged continuous dose, z i are potential effect modifiers, and γ i are the corresponding coefficients.
The Center for Biological Diversity estimates that we are losing species at about 1,000 to 10,000 times the "background rate," or the normal rate of extinction over the natural course of evolution.
We obtained a net diversification rate for the crown group of core ruschioids of 4.44 (2.12 19.03) sp Myr−1 using the younger calibration age, or 3.30 (1.77–11.90) sp Myr−1 using the older calibration age; the net rate for the core ruschioids has been at least four times faster than the background rate for the family (Table 2).
Step 3: Health burden ○ The annual average PM2.5exposure indoors, based on evenings spent at home is then used with the background rate in the exposed population and the RR for personal exposure to obtain the burden of cardiovascular hospital admissions due to peat exposure.
The background rate was estimated at 1.08 cases per million, corresponding to approximately 23 cases in 2006 among males aged 20 to 89 years.
