Similarly, the 26 associations recorded in the Mokihinui catchment exceeded the national average of 5 ± 0.41 associations per catchment five-fold.

Our analysis quantitatively demonstrates that the Mokihinui catchment supports one of the most diverse sets of forest alliances and associations recorded in a New Zealand catchment and its combination is unique.

Three genetically related successions with a total thickness of 100 300 m and a total duration of 12.5 Myr comprising eight facies associations record two initial progradational phases and a final aggradational phase.
