That year he returned to Texas A&M as an associate dean of engineering, engineering research coordinator and associate director of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station.
His father retired as an associate professor of engineering at Pennsylvania State University.
"The first thing she did was alienate everyone in the program," said Bernard McIntyre, associate professor of engineering technology at Houston.
"Computers are very good at mathematical operations," said Andrea Vedaldi, an associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, who was not involved in the project.
"When we speak about earthquakes, one can actually calculate a certain probability," said Franz-Josef Ulm, associate professor of engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Nancy Toomey, chairwoman of the women in science section of the academy and associate dean of engineering and applied sciences at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, said she was not completely comfortable with the changes under way.
The commission is promoting the approach as a replacement for its own "cookbook" rules, which set strict procedures without allowing room for analysis, said John A. Grobe, the commission's associate director of engineering and safety systems.
But reliable carbon labels are probably years away, says Arpad Horvath, an associate professor of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, who is currently examining the life cycle of some two dozen consumer products.
Prof Ana Deletic, associate dean of engineering at Monash University, explains that research flourished, especially into reclaiming stormwater – the polluted rainfall that flows off roads and car parks, into the bay.
"If the attrition continues to escalate, at some point you get behind the power curve, no matter what you do," said David Pehrson, deputy associate director of engineering at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif.
The Bar Code Reader team "didn't hook up a cellphone, so we used a Motorola simulator," said Michael Crowley, an associate professor of engineering practice who was the mentor for the team.
