In fact, a reduction in the number of females was observed among the lower growing fish in the olive flounder, one of the species previously assigned to pattern 3 [35].
Our results show that of the 53 55 species (depending on the authors) previously assigned to pattern 1, the 33 cichlid species of the genus Apistogramma indeed exhibit pattern 1 (Fig. 3A a; Table 1) fulfilling the criteria for the assignment of TSD.
The other effect, the increase in males at high temperatures in species previously assigned to pattern 3, is likely the result of sex-reversal of females as a consequence of the inhibition of aromatase (Fig. 3C b), the enzyme that produces estrogens essential for female sex differentiation in fish [37].
The inhibition of aromatase at high temperatures –and the consequent increase in the number of males- has also been reported in some species without TSD [15], [38], also explaining why they were assigned to pattern 1, and, interestingly, also seen in many species of reptiles [34], [39].
4 of the implants were assigned to pattern B, as they got secondary stable, and 2 of the implants were assigned to pattern A, as they showed a continuous subsidence.
According to this classification, 74 implants were assigned to pattern D (primary stable) with a mean migration of –0.2 mm (SD 0.35) (CI: –0.3 to –0.1).
Twenty-six traits (67% of all traits) can be assigned to pattern 1 (simple extension) and nine traits (23%) to pattern 2 (step along the size axis) (see Table 5).
When these two estimates of pattern strength do not match, a high "surprise score" is assigned to the pattern, identifying the pattern as potentially interesting.
For female patients the proportional overlapping of each pattern related to the other patterns is shown in figure 3. 47.1% and 55.1% of all female patients with ADS and pain and cardiovascular/metabolic disorders, respectively, are only attributed to this and no other pattern, while another 37.3% and 33.8%, respectively, are assigned to both patterns simultaneously.
