Assessment design concerns the processes of gathering background information, building assessment arguments, authoring tasks, and developing scoring algorithms to support the intended purpose of an assessment.
The chapter describes the processes involved in reasoning through assessment arguments and by highlighting the foundations of model construction; the approach provides a framework that is grounded in the first principles of assessment and inference.

The increasingly popular framework of Assessment Use Argument proposed in Bachman and Palmer (2010) is specifically designed to enable language testers to "demonstrate to stakeholders that the intended uses of their assessments are justified" (p. 2).
Based on this assessment, an argument can be made for investing in the S&P index, which, as a whole, is graded just 15 points riskier than the average score for its ten most reliable (least risky) stocks.
This model was later expanded into the framework of assessment use argument (AUA) (see Bachman and Palmer, 2010), which effectively linked test taker's performance to the decisions made of the test results and the consequences of using an assessment in a particular context.
To address this problem we introduce a semi-structured formalism for argumentation, called LAF-ensembles, capturing a set of essential features of structured arguments and define a class of set based argumentation frameworks appropriate to support a semantic assessment of arguments for LAF-ensembles.
The case presented by the European Commission in 2004 in favour of allowing the merger was "vitiated by a manifest error of assessment"; its arguments were incomplete and did not include relevant data.
Conceptual analysis, careful assessment of arguments, the rooting out of ambiguity, the drawing of clarifying distinctions which make up at least part of the philosophical analysis package have been respected activities within philosophy from the dawn of the field.
In the context of health technology assessment, productivity arguments are most effective when they are based on observational studies carried out in a relevant setting.
