The phrase "ask for air" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used in contexts where someone is requesting to have air, either literally or metaphorically, such as needing a break or space.
Example: "After running for several minutes, I had to stop and ask for air to catch my breath."
Alternatives: "request some air" or "seek fresh air".
