The phrase "ash black" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to describe a very dark shade of black, often with a hint of gray, resembling the color of ash.
Example: "The walls were painted in a deep ash black, giving the room a moody and sophisticated atmosphere."
Alternatives: "charcoal black" or "slate black".
Much of the center of the city, however, is bare of such structures, and ash black as if smoldering.
