We tested two new groups of observers and found that while RF search was slowed by the addition of segmenting lines for both groups, the high AQ group retained a consistent search advantage (reflected in a shallower gradient for reaction time as a function of set size) over the low AQ group.
Reaction times (RT), and their variation as a function of set size (the total number of items present), are generally used to measure the influence of attention.
Indeed, several recent studies have shown that it is possible to explain the variation of performance as a function of set-size during CVS without requiring serial attentional mechanisms (e.g. see [8] [10]).
In the visual search tasks, set size was omitted as a factor in the analysis of the RT slope and RT intercept because they are computed as a function of set size.
Perhaps the most intriguing result from our visual search tasks was that the nighttime decrease in accuracy as a function of set size was accompanied by a trend towards shallower RT slopes (Figure 2 upper panels), similar to what Horowitz et al [15] found in a sleep deprivation study.
In a preliminary experiment on the same group of subjects (n = 12) that also participated in the main experiment, we determined search slopes (that is, the variation in reaction time as a function of set size) for the two tasks that we intended to use in the main experiment: finding the letter T among Ls, and finding the symbol + among Ls.
As a consequence, parallel search yields fairly small slopes for response time as a function of set size.
As the increase in DT as a function of set size is not necessarily linear, we included both a linear and quadratic slope.
