They want nonprofit money spent on art, not symbols of executive power.
Mitchell Korn, an arts consultant, said the revolving door of executive directors at Ballet Theater was "part of the problem" behind its financial situation.
Asked about the garment district as a location for performing arts, Stanford Makishi, executive director of the Baryshnikov Arts Center, said, "It's gratifying that others have followed us here, because it suddenly feels like we made a really smart choice".
"We want to create a street of the arts," said Rebecca Robertson, executive director of the redevelopment.
"Children's educational activities at museums are designed to teach and inspire children, but also encourage a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of the arts, said Beth Levinthal, executive director of the Heckscher, which welcomes around 7,000 children a year to its programs.
"There's a lack of affordable space in Harlem for the visual and performing arts," said Michael Unthank, executive director of the Harlem Arts Alliance, one of those arts service organizations.
"This award gives us the opportunity to make our county a major place for the creation and exhibition of art," said Janet T. Langsam, executive director of the Westchester Arts Council, which administers the prize.
"A crucial question is: To what extent will the SAM, including the academies' contributions, provide policy options or just display the state of the art?" says Matthias Johannsen, executive director of ALLEA, the federation of All European Academies, based in Berlin.

"The result of Prop S here in San Francisco will be a strong indication that this kind of effort can prevail in other metro areas," said Brad Erickson, arts advocate and executive director of Theater Bay Area, who is confident the measure will pass.
