It is only theorized to be an intra-articular phase change of carbon dioxide and actual "cavities" in zygapophyseal joints have yet to be visualized during or immediately following HVLA thrust manipulation of any spinal region [ 11, 15, 41].
The most important example comes from the recognition that clinical arthritis and subclinical synovitis are anticipated by a pre-articular immunologic phase possibly developing in lymphoid tissues as well as in the lungs [ 2, 3].
