Although giving a paper is part of academic culture, professors often fail to recognise that presentations are not journal articles, says Edwards. "They're a completely different medium of communication and they require a different set of skills," he adds.
"This will be a service, so we'll crawl their sites and serve up the most appropriate articles," says Hickman. "We'll never sell someone's bookmarks to another site".
Fugh-Berman, who is now researching ways that marketing messages can be inserted into articles, says review articles should be read especially cautiously.
"I learned a significant amount of new science that was required to edit some of the articles," says Glover, and "the new knowledge gained has become very useful in my everyday scientific life".
Most critically, it doesn't adequately address the reuse rights needed for the public to do more than simply read individual articles," says Heather Joseph, executive director of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition SPARCC).
