The phrase "article were used" is not correct in standard written English.
It should be "articles were used" or "the article was used" depending on the intended meaning.
Example: "In the study, several articles were used to support the findings."
Alternatives: "the articles utilized" or "the article employed".
But the claims that figures in the article were used in Obokata's thesis seem to be on target.
