The art-subway stations were conceived as part of a larger urban transport plan that was formally adopted in 2003, even though some of the art stations were already operating.

The first "art station" opened in 2001, but the ambitious idea for a public art project in the underground system dates from the late 1980s.

The event also included interactive art stations and student performances by iRhyme, Single Carrot Theatre, and OrchKids.
