Stories of this sort, exemplified here by Aimee Bender's "Girl in the Flammable Skirt" and Dawn Raffel's "Up the Old Goat Road," proceed line by arresting line, and sometimes deliberately hide the narrative thread and turn themselves into puzzles.
In a typically arresting line, a cop summarises the evidence excitedly: "Sex, drugs, rock'n'roll – and he's a Muslim!" Yet this apparently simple "solve" remains, across the whole of this HBO eight-parter, ambiguous to the end – and possibly even beyond it.
"Yeah I Said It" is a late-night sexy slow jam, with the arresting line "I want you to homicide it" surely a double meaning, which I'm still mulling over.

As they ate, residents recapped the events of their day, and Mr. Gorski entertained them with a tale of his first "scrub-in," which included the arresting line, "Hey, Gorski, want to cut a woman's leg off?" AS REMARKABLE AS IT IS that Mr. Gorski owns Rabbit Island, perhaps more surprising is what he has chosen to do with it.

Created and written by Jed Mercurio, whose previous shows include the British medical dramas "Bodies" and "Cardiac Arrest," "Line of Duty" is slightly reminiscent of "The Wire" in the way it presents police work as a miasma of compromise, careerism and endless gray zones.
However, even a TV-maker as talented as Mercurio – whose Cardiac Arrest, Line of Duty and Critical resuscitated the medium's sclerotic cop and doc genres – can't overcome the problem that a Lawrence dramatisation that decides (or is forced by BBC guidelines) neither to show nor to speak of genitals is as perverse as a calorie-controlled Great British Bake-Off or a politically correct Top Gear.
