In C. elegans genetic screens for Pat (Paralyzed, Arrested elongation at Two fold) mutants has identified animals with defects in sarcomere assembly, and these have proven a powerful aid in identifying novel focal adhesion proteins and for the investigation of their functions in vivo (for example, see [18] [20], [24]).
A previous genetic screen investigating early muscle development produced 13 independent mutant genes exhibiting a Pat (paralyzed and arrested elongation at the two-fold length of embryonic development) muscle phenotype.
In a recent study, Yosef and co-authors (MBio, 2010) showed that overexpression of the M-domain of Ffh selectively affected translation of membrane proteins suggesting that Ffh might be responsible for arresting elongation in bacteria.
In man, 5′ capping factors and RNA polymerases associate with 3′ end processing factors, again suggesting a gene loop forms; as such co-localization is enhanced by arresting elongation, polymerases at each end could recruit the processing machinery to facilitate production of the mature message [ 35].

However, this is not enough to represent the complex responses of bystander cells, which could have various intermediate states between life and death, such as arrest or elongation of the cell cycle or the G0 state.
RA has been shown to down-regulate FGF signaling and to induce differentiation and death of the tail bud precursors leading to the arrest of elongation (Tenin et al, 2010, BMC Biol; Olivera Martinez et al, 2011, PLOS Biol).
Indeed, perturbation of SpTORC2-Gad8 signaledg led to cell cycle arrest and elongation in response to DNA damage, consistent with activation of the DNA damage checkpoint response (Schonbrun et al, 2013).
