The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the party's campaign arm tasked with supporting Democrats in Senate races, has had a team of what an aide described as "less than a handful of staff" in Alabama since the GOP runoff in September, all working under the direction of the campaign.
A previous study has shown that the eight-arm task elicits greater HPC immediate-early gene (IEG) expression than the one-arm task (Vann et al., 2000).
Our radial maze experiments were based on a previous IEG study that found greater Fos expression in HPC following the eight-arm task compared with the one-arm task (Vann et al., 2000).
Hence, we predicted that spatial processing would elicit higher tissue O2 signals in dHPC than vHPC, and also that the eight-arm task would elicit higher signals than the one-arm task.
A flow diagram of the eight-arm task is given in Supporting Information (Supporting Information, Fig. S2).
Thus, the sensorimotor (e.g. physical activity) and motivational demands of the two tasks were the same, but only the eight-arm task required spatial working memory.
In the one-arm task, one arm (e.g. 'west') was designated the reward arm and the remaining seven arms were always in the closed position.
Of course, training on the eight-arm task is likely to lead to directed or maintained attention towards the relative familiarity of the spatial cues.
This was characterized by a transient but consistent increase in the dHPC O2 signal in the eight-arm but not the one-arm task (Fig. 5A).
An anova investigated the effects of task state (two levels: task, baseline), memory load (two levels: eight-arm, one-arm task) and electrode placement (two levels: dHPC, vHPC).
This result is consistent with, and expands upon, previous findings showing higher IEG expression in rat HPC following the eight-arm vs. the one-arm task (Vann et al., 2000).
