In permafrost areas the surface layer of ground that freezes in the winter (seasonally frozen ground) and thaws in summer is called the active layer.
Near the Equator, precipitation dominates and surface salinities of about 35 parts per thousand are encountered; but, in latitudes 20° to 25° N and about 20° S, evaporation greatly exceeds precipitation, and over large areas the surface salinity is greater than 37 parts per thousand.
Because there is clear low coherence of the interferograms along the linear surface ruptures in this area (Fig. 3) compared with other areas, the surface of the ground would tend to break rather than bend.
We modeled the proportion of parasitized caterpillars using GLM (pooling traps for a site) with the surface of open urban areas, the surface of artificial urban areas, the density of free flying butterflies and their interactions as explanatory variables and assuming a binomial error.

These data were used to calculate the volume of air, the volume of tissue, the surface area, the surface area to tissue volume ratio.
On the trenched area the surface contamination is somewhat unevenly distributed (see inset to Figure 2).
The relative organ length is the length of the organ divided by the body length, and the relative organ surface area is the surface area of the organ divided by the body surface area.
