The largest area of bio-energy plantations in 2050 in the recent literature is 2.4 times larger than the area currently used for cropland or almost equal to the current area of human-used forests (see Table 1a) [ 17].
Urbanisation, efficiency improvement in agriculture, and the transition to a post-industrial economy in Europe and North America has taken large areas of land out of human use that could be returned to a 'natural' state.
