In 1984 the Democratic Party created a category of "superdelegates," who are unpledged to any candidate.
However, about 18% of delegates (for the Democrats, anyway) are "unpledged", ie, not determined by primaries and caucuses.
Superdelegates, however, are "unpledged". They get to vote with only their own conscience guiding them, in other words, instead of some rule that forces them to vote for one candidate or another based upon the results of the primary vote.
The other three are unpledged party leaders.
Superdelegates are unpledged Democratic party leaders who are free to support any candidate.
