Behaviors we adopted as children in response to a negative interpersonal environment can hurt us adults, especially in conditions where these behaviors are no longer adaptive.
This illusion of connection may have felt like a lifesaving adaptation when we were little and needed these people for our very survival, but as adults, these patterns are no longer adaptive and hurt us in our ability to become who we ourselves want to be.
