For example, an allometry of canopy status vs dbh would make a tree of a given dbh equally likely to be in the canopy, whether it was found in an open field, a young stand, or an old growth forest.
This means that, in effect, the canopy height Z varies across space, such that a tree of a given species and size would be in the canopy if it was in one location, but in the understory if it was in another location; and that canopy trees can adopt irregular crowns, as they experience different canopy heights Z with different neighbours (Fig. 1a).
For all species, larger trees were more likely to be in the canopy, but the slope and curvature of the relationship varied greatly between species (see examples given in Fig. 4).
