LAS VEGAS — At the University Medical Center here, alarms were set off three years ago — kidney transplants were failing at unusually high rates, and some patients were even dying.
In "The Fleeting Romance of the American Road" (Week in Review, Aug. 11), you quote William Clay Ford Jr., the chairman and chief executive of the Ford Motor Company, as saying America's "love affair" with cars has "grown stale" and is "even dying".
"During the nearly 25 years I've worked in the industry, the love affair that people have had with automobiles has in some ways grown stale, and some would say it's even dying," Mr. Ford said.
That's even dying in Japan.

In this particular case, despite enthusiastic fanning by one or two tabloid journalists, I can assure you that behind the smoke there are not even dying embers.
In a recent survey, more Americans said they were afraid of public speaking than being robbed or even dying!
Some are even said to die of sorrow.
