The phrase "are able to align" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when discussing the capability or capacity to bring things into agreement or harmony.
Example: "The team is confident that they are able to align their strategies with the company's goals."
Alternatives: "can align" or "are capable of aligning".
They are able to align themselves in the current like windsocks at an aerodrome, so that they find the best position for power generation.

Four of the programs (BLAT, GMAP, SPA and Splign) are able to align a cDNA against the whole genome.

Using the Bowtie2 read aligner [ 13] with the default settings we were able to align between 82.0 % and 96.2 % of sequenced reads as concordant pairs to the final genome assemblies, indicating that the genome assemblies are relatively complete.
