Most of West Bengal lies in the fertile, arable, alluvial plains of the Ganges river and its tributaries and is the fruit-and-vegetable bowl of eastern India.
The arable, undulating plain northeast of the Tees valley and near Barnard Castle grows cereals, potatoes, and fodder crops; dairy cattle are also raised in the area.
More rugged and less arable than the High Plains, the Southwestern Tablelands are dominated by rangelands and consist of shortgrass prairies, juniper-pinyon woodlands, and scrub oak savannas (Woods et al. 2005; Griffin et al. 2006; Graham et al. 2013).
