The International Astronomical Union this month approved names for several moons of Uranus, some of which were discovered in 1997.
The astronomical union also approved names for various other bodies and features in the solar system, including Petit-Prince for the tiny satellite orbiting the asteroid Eugenia and Lolita, Cupid, Don Quixote and other love-struck names for features on Eros, the asteroid that is currently being studied by the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous spacecraft.
Only gene symbols approved by the HGNC are accepted; for this reason we include a list of valid HGNC gene identifiers, together with alternative aliases and a link to Entrez Gene, that will enable users to check gene aliases and HGNC approved names for their gene(s) of interest [see Additional file 2].
For example, the approved name of ABCA4 is written as "ATP-binding cassette sub-family A (ABC1), member 4" in the HUGO database.

This naming system provides temporary identifiers for these presumably ecologically important organisms until they receive a candidate or approved name.
The HUGO approved names were obtained for the University of Michigan list of apoptosis regulators [ 15], combined with the lists of differentially changed genes and a list of apoptotic genes was obtained (see Additional file 4 Table Two for full apoptosis list).

And there is precedent for memorializing someone more for the manner of his death than for the grandeur of his achievements: Earlier this month, the Council approved naming a street in Bushwick, Brooklyn, for Jose O. Sucuzhañay, an Ecuadorean immigrant beaten to death there last year.
