The phrase "approaches the sample" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used in contexts where one is discussing methods or techniques that involve getting closer to or examining a sample, such as in scientific research or analysis.
Example: "The researcher approaches the sample with caution to avoid contamination during the testing process."
Alternatives: "nears the sample" or "comes close to the sample".
