These are strategies that people use when trying to change their behaviour or in protecting their current behaviour from relapse and include the identification and expression of emotions regarding the problem behaviour, appraising values in respect to the behaviour, access and use of social support; and individual commitment to changing the behaviour [ 4].
This is because cultural frames not only 'inform how people cognitively perceive themselves and the world in which they live' (Kirk and Papachristos 2011 11966) but they also alter how people appraise others' behaviour through the 'role-taking' process (Mead 1934; Matsueda 1992).
In summary, we hypothesized that where legal recourse is believed to be an ineffective or an otherwise unreasonable strategy of action, parents appraise violent behaviour as reasonable responses to conflict or threatening situations in contexts bereft of formal social control rather than as indicative of trait-based predispositions.
Compared to existing instruments for observing non-technical skills, 3 15 30 the EPOC is distinctive as it quantifies general verbal behaviours rather than appraising context-specific behavioural markers that require clinical expertise.
Its principles of enhancing people's ability to elicit behaviour change through a better ability to think and appraise their risk behaviour can also be relevant to other people with HIV risk behaviour.
Consistent with our hypothesis, our results, therefore, suggest that parents are less likely to appraise adolescents' violent behaviour as indicative of aggressive or impulsive temperaments when the neighbourhood is characterized by higher levels of legal cynicism.
While the participants in this study regarded it as part of the process of maintaining healthy behaviour, their emphasis was on controlling environmental triggers, social support and appraising their beliefs or values concerning the behaviour.
