On February 8th UCAS will release figures expected to show that record numbers of people have applied for courses starting in the autumn.
A further 79,528 of the 610,453 who applied for courses this year were still waiting to see whether a place had been confirmed, while 6,393 would-be students had pulled out of the race.
In total, 36,051 English students have applied for these courses, compared with the 35,455 who applied for courses starting this autumn - an increase of 1.7%.

It remains to be seen how many apply for courses, and I'll be keeping my eye firmly on those numbers.
The Ucas website recommends students speak to a careers adviser if they are thinking about applying for courses that share no common themes.
The final application figures will be announced in the autumn because some students apply for courses between now and the end of June, outside the official route.
