We'll detail this first because some old SLR cameras need their apertures stopped down in order to meter; this makes the viewfinder much darker, and makes it harder to see when you're in focus or not.

What you're doing is bring shutter one stop up (halve the speed, i.e. double the exposure duration from one 400th to one 200th of a second) and the aperture one stop down (halve the area of the opening).
Modern cameras meter with the lens at its widest aperture, and only stop down the lens to its selected aperture at the moment of exposure.
So, take two photographs, one with a larger aperture, and then stop down and take one with a smaller aperture.
