There have been any number of works at Tate Britain carrying the potential to offend: with six centuries of art on display you can spot examples of latent sexism, xenophobia, racism and just about every other human prejudice.
Any number of works of the period openly celebrated the physicality of making art, including Richard Serra's classic "Splashing," a 1968 performance piece in which he threw molten lead into a wall corner to make a cast sculpture.
Mr. Ames said that he intended the story line and its closing shot as allusions to any number of works, including "Oedipus Rex" — another narrative about a man seeking the truth about his parents that Mr. Ames called "the first detective story" — as well as films like "Casablanca," "Vertigo" and "Chinatown".
