It first had to embed 210 antenna loops in the pavement at various spots along the route.
The device consists of two parts, one is the signal pickup antenna formed by four square pickup loops, and another one is a SQUID directly coupled to the common line which separates the antenna loops.
Twenty-six nests were fitted with PIT detecting antenna loops attached to a data logger to identify tagged individuals incubating them (Fig. 1).
As each contact between a tagged roach and an antenna provided data of specimen ID and time of contact, we were able to calculate the ground speed of the roach migrating through the antenna loops.
A thin antennae loop (ø 9cm) was fitted into the nest cup and connected to a datalogger approximately 0.5 m outside of the nest (Supplementary Picture S2a c).
A radio frequency identification device (RFID a thin antennae loop fitted into a nest cup and connected to a data logger registered every 5 s the identity of an incubating bird (marked with a green flag with embedded passive-integrated transponder; details in Bulla et al. 2014a).
Three sets of dipole antennas, tri-axial loop antennas, a wireless communication antenna, and actuators, are attached to the housing, and the other components are installed inside the housing.

The paper selects the coordinates of the open-loop model that simplify the shaping of the closed-loop performance, and analyzes the impact of the weights on the antenna closed-loop bandwidth, disturbance rejection properties, and antenna acceleration.
In addition, loop antennas, dipole antennas, and actuators that are used for expanding dipole antennas are attached on the housing.
