Marcia Hafif, the New York abstract painter who now divides her time between the coasts, is the oldest artist here, and she weighs in with an anomalous work: a wall-size handwritten text about women, aging and sexuality that makes its presence felt.
The anomalous work hardening observed in the classic torsion plastic deformation experiment on copper rods of small diameter of Fleck, Muller, Ashby and Hutchinson [Acta Metall Mater, 42, (1994) 475], and seen too in the bent thin nickel foils experiments of Stölken and Evans [Acta mater, 46, (1998) 5109], has been explained as caused by the presence of N-dislocations.
I think they were seen as anomalous works, as belonging in a separate category.
DE KOONING, FONTANA, HESSE An adventure in maverick connoisseurship tests anomalous works by Lucio Fontana (polychrome ceramic sculptures, made between 1940 and 1955) and Eva Hesse (Action-y paintings, most from 1962) against a gold standard of furious expressiveness: works on paper by Willem de Kooning that relate to his brief, brilliant foray into sculpture, in the early seventies.
This paper comes down on the side of the skimping (N-dislocation density always less than or equal to the R-dislocation density) answer to the origin of anomalous work hardening, rather than the swamping (N-dislocation density greater than R-dislocation density) answer (in the absence of hardening mechanisms, such as dislocation locks, that can rescue the swamping explanation).
