"However, by applying other mediums to painting, like sculpture, installation, sound, video, animation, performance, etcetera, I'm attempting to break down these sterile art exhibition barriers that are in place and create something people can really become inthralled with and explore," Bock tells Creators.
All have been used in Mr. Thayer's animations and performance animations, including "Phantasmagoria" in the Williams show and in his collaborations with Dave Miko, on view in "Dave Miko and Tom Thayer: New World Pig" at the Kitchen (512 West 19th Street, through March 5).
The museum said that the show will include documentation and music from Mothersbaugh's Devo days; prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures, rugs and video animations; performances; newly produced musical and sculptural installations; and a lifelong series of postcard-sized works that will be exhibited in its entirety.
"It's a film that uses a lot of different techniques," he said, "combining live action with computer-generated animation and with animal performances.
The episodes are very short — less than two minutes — and will mix in animation, documentary, performance and other formats.
Dickenson created projections and sculptures, utilizing both animation and performance footage.
The blending of animation and performance is part of what made the original so spectacular.
Artists featured are award-winning and emerging, with works ranging from animation to performance, experimental, and documentary.
The piece, called Datum Explorer, is a project by Universal Assembly Unit (UAU), the studio of architecture graduates William Gowland, Samantha Lee, Oliviu Lugojan-Ghenciu, and Zhan Wang, who work in experimental animation, AV performance, and large-scale installations.
Two music videos were made to promote the release of "Animal"; the first was directed by Sebastian Mlynarski and depicts the band wearing different animal masks, and the second video, directed by Anthony Dickenson, features a mixture of projections, animation and performance footage.
