The three sites without Omao are Puu Waawaa Bird Sanctuary, managed by the Hawaii Department of Natural Resources, Honaunau Forest Reserve, owned and managed by Kamehameha Schools, and The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii's Kona Hema Preserve.
The three sites with Omao are the Pua Akala tract of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, Keauhou Ranch, which is owned and managed by Kamehameha Schools, and The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii's Kaiholena Preserve.
Park officials have said that it is impossible to ensure the safety of every single tree in the park, and the conservancy spends upward of half a million dollars annually on tree maintenance.
