Several sequence characteristics were discovered to define the TamB protein family: A signal-anchor linkage to the inner membrane, beta-helical structure, conserved domain architecture and a C-terminal region that mimics outer membrane protein beta-strands.
This character is very useful in anchoring linkage groups to chromosomes during genetic mapping and in mapping of qualitative-trait genes and in QTL tracking.
Consequently, many markers in cotton were mapped to multiple positions during linkage genetic map construction, posing a challenge to anchoring linkage groups and mapping economically-important genes to particular chromosomes.
