Foresight Analytics, a research firm, reckons that $594 billion of commercial mortgages will mature in America alone between 2009 and 2011.
Banks are expected to record $70 billion in profits in 2010, according to Foresight Analytics, a financial research firm.
Banks, as a group, reported $3.4 trillion in unused credit card lines at the end of September, according to a compilation by Foresight Analytics of bank reports to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
"On the commercial side," said Matthew Anderson, a partner in Foresight Analytics, a research firm based in Oakland, Calif., "I think we are fairly early in the down cycle".
According to Foresight Analytics, a research firm, at current values half of the debt coming due this year in America is in negative equity.
About 8.2 percent of loans were either past due or in default in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to Foresight Analytics.
Matthew Anderson of Foresight Analytics says that banks with assets between $100m and $10 billion hold commercial-property loans worth more than three times their total risk-based capital.
"When you look at the regional impact, the areas that were the booming condominium markets, like South Florida, have shown a surge in delinquency rates," said Matthew Anderson, a partner in Foresight Analytics, a real estate market analysis firm based in Oakland, Calif.
About $870 billion, or roughly half of the industry's $1.8 trillion of commercial real estate loans, now sit on the balance sheets of small and medium-size banks like these, according to an analysis by Foresight Analytics, a research firm.
Construction and land loans are now the biggest problem for hundreds of deeply troubled lenders and pose far greater dangers than commercial loans or home mortgages, according to Foresight Analytics, a banking industry research firm.
